The church of San Pedro de Echano

The church of San Pedro de Echano belongs to the municipality of Olóriz. Today is a exempt building located in a small valley. The ‘Despoblado de Echano’ that names the place is half hidden among the trees of a forest of oaks and is located north of the temple, approximately 250-300 meters straight up the slope of the mountain.

It is known that Echano had its own parish church. The first documented of the ‘Despoblado’ appears in ‘Los Cartularios Reales’, 1007-1384 (General Archive of Navarre), quoting the King Theobald II of Navarre, in the year 1264, granted them exemption from punishment for involuntary homicide much the villages of the Valdorba, among which was that of Echano. Later, in 1373, documented in “Loose Papers” II, 1237-1399 (General Archive of Navarre), is reported to Jehan de Neuffons, squire of Queen acknowledges having accepted form the ‘Recibidor’ of Sangüesa and from the ‘Jury of Echano’, 6 ‘cahices’ of barley delivered to the ‘forrería’ of the queen for their horses.
